The team at Peter Marlow Foundation are thrilled to welcome British artist Natasha Caruana for this breakfast webinar to share her knowledge about funding your work as a photographer. At PMF one of the pillars of our work is Photographer Support so we are grateful that Natasha will be offering some of the hard won wisdom that she shares through her international creative education platform Work Show Grow based out of neighbouring Margate, Kent.

Before you start a funding application, you need to be ready mentally. Many photographers unknowingly carry limiting beliefs that sabotage their efforts before they even begin - doubts about their work, fear of rejection, confusion, or the belief that “creatives like me don’t get funded.” In this 50-minute masterclass by Natasha and produced in collaboration with Work Show Grow, you’ll learn the real, behind-the-scenes strategies that transform overwhelmed photographers into confident applicants who secure grants, residencies, and paid opportunities. The session will give you plenty to think about, and you’ll leave with practical steps, motivation, and a stronger foundation to approach funding your projects with confidence.

Natasha Caruana is a British artist based in Margate, Kent working across photography, moving image, installation, and drawing. Her practice is rooted in autobiographical, exploring the complexities of love, betrayal, and fantasy. Often drawing from personal archives, internet and lived experiences , Caruana’s work challenges familiar cultural narratives around relationships and intimacy, revealing the deeply private negotiations that underpin them.

In 2018, she founded Work Show Grow, an international creative education platform committed to supporting creatives to build sustainable practices, cultivate confidence, and secure funding to advance their work. In 2020 she went on to co-found Work Show Grow School. Her mentorship and teaching centre on empowerment, community-building and demystifying how you can make a career in the arts work.

Caruana holds an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art. Her work has been exhibited widely, with recent solo exhibitions including A Lover’s Discourse at the Centre de la photographie de Mougins (2021-22) and Fairytale for Sale at the Centre for British Photography (2023). Earlier notable presentations include Married Man at the International Center of Photography, New York (2016) and At First Sight at Les Rencontres d’Arles and Paris Photo (2014-15). Her work has also been shown at Turner Contemporary (Margate), FACT (Liverpool), the Science Gallery (London), and in exhibitions across Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia. Her works are held in several public and private collections.

In 2014 she was awarded the BMW Artist in Residence Award at the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, resulting in the monograph Coup de Foudre. She has been longlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize (2018, 2022) and nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award (2014, 2023).

Alongside her artistic practice, Caruana has contributed significantly to arts education. She is a Senior Lecturer of Photography at the University of the Arts London and also serves as a Trustee of Photoworks (UK), advocating for equity and access in contemporary photography.
