Liverpool: Looking Out to Sea
Liverpool,1980’s
Having photographed the rise of Margaret Thatcher, her portrait becoming one of Peter’s most iconic images, Peter became moved to photograph the effect of the Thatcherite policies on the nation. This assignment led him to Liverpool in the early 1980’s.
The raw and insightful photographs show the decline of the once great and prevalent maritime city of the British Empire, Liverpool. Peter’s photographs captured both the social decline and the impact of poverty on parts of the community but also the inherent sense of survival and determination against all odds.
He captured the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster. There was much chaos and negligence demonstrated by the investigation which devastatingly overshadowed the space and time to grieve the 96 victims of this disaster. However, through these solemn and poignant moments, documented by Peter, fans and families are given the peace to reflect and pay their respects months after. A tradition that is kept and marked every April particularly by the football community.
